Swedana karma

The word Swedana is derived from the Sanskrit word, meaning to sweat or perspire. Swedana Karma is a group of procedures used to induce sweating. Swedana helps in relieving stiffness, cold, heaviness in the body and produces sweat. Swedana also refers to internal excreta of the body. According to Ayurveda, Swedana Karma is instrumental in helping to liquefy the sticky and adherent doshas that have lodged in the peripheral tissues. Swedana will help soften and melt the toxins, opens up the pores of skin and help in expelling them from the body in an efficient manner.

VALUKA SWEDA

Valuka sweda is an effective holistic treatment in Ayurveda and a part of rooksha sweda therapy. It is generally carried out after Abhyanga and Snehana treatments.

Valuka - sand
Sweda - sweat

Valuka means sand and in this particular procedure, sand is taken in a cloth and made into bolus (Pinda) and Swedana is done with this bolus by heating it in a hot pan. Sand should be free from thorn, clear, not too fine nor too big. Heated sand is used to make painful body parts swell. This process is called fomentation. Valuka Sweda is most effective for conditions characterized by swelling, heaviness, and stiffness. It can be performed on a specific part of the body or the Whole body itself.

PROCEDURE

Preparation of Potali (Bolus) Sand with the above said qualities are taken and should be equally put into two piece of Cloths respectively and they are tied individually into a bolus. Since it is a Rooksha type of Sweda given in Sama conditions, Patient need not be given Abhyanga or Massage. The Bolus or Potali is kept in a pan with sufficient quantity of heat is provided. The Therapist should be careful regarding the temperature of Potali or Bolus, In order to check hotness of the bolus – he can touch the bolus with the back side of his palm. After feeling that the temperature of the bolus is suitable, the therapist can use it over patient’s afflicted body parts. When therapist feels that the temperature has reduced, he should re – heat it by keeping it on the Pan. It should be performed for 20 – 30 mins.
